Captains (and how to place a bid)

Captains,

You have a couple of tasks that you will need to do. This page will be where you'll find the answers to all your questions. If you don't find an answer here, please contact us .

To place a bid for Gender Blender XII, follow the steps below:

  1. Complete the bid submission form for team captains.
You can be as creative as you like with your bids (no outright bribery please), however this form must be completed.
Deadline: Completed by 10pm on May 3rd, 2008!

  2. Send a deposit for $300 CAD to "The Ultimate Experience".
Details, including the address will be mailed when you submit your form.
Deadline: In my hands by 10pm on May 3rd, 2008!

  3. Have each other member of your team complete the waiver form.
This includes non-players. If they camp, eat and drink, then they are taking part in the event. Please help us out here captains and get your team to do this sooner rather than later. Anyone without a completed waiver will be ejected from the tourney without a refund.

  4. Wait until May 5rd, 2008. Successful bids will be announced over email and posted online.
Unsuccessful bids will be given the opportunity to be placed on a waiting list. Deposits from unsuccessful bids will be mailed out on the 1st of June, 2008. You can check the status of your bid (to ensure we got it and all your players signed the waiver) on the Bids We Have page.

  5. If you are successful, confirm via email that you are still interested in attending and send the rest of your payment ($1020 CAD) to us by May 23rd.
Failure to pay up or contact us may mean us moving on to the next team on the waiting list. To clarify, there is no team fee per se. The cost is $110 per person, and a minimum team size of 12 people is required for us to budget the event properly. Hence, your deposit and this amount covers your first 12 people on your roster.

  6. Download your captains package. (we're still putting this together... it will be ready by May).
Captains, you are responsible for your team knowing everything they need to, so please make so you get this info to them.

  7. Plan organize and get ready for the best weekend of the year!
Hopefully you've been doing this all along! We're looking for some amazing campsites, Saturday night performances, Sunday games, and of course... wonderful spirit all weekend!

  8. On the weekend, bring food in a box labeled with your team name for the food bank!
As in past years, we will be collecting food for the local food bank. Didn't bring any? The local grocery store is right around the corner and it takes 15 minutes and $10 CAD/person from your team to make a real difference in the lives of others. Don't slack off... we will be watching which teams contribute and which freeload!

  9. On the Friday night or Saturday morning of the tourney, please stop by and pick up your wrist bands for the Saturday Night Disco Dance Off, and pay for each member of your team above 12 ($110 CAD/person).

Please also make sure you know the 11th edition rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are you looking for in a bid?
People have asked what I'm looking for on their bids... after all, every year, some teams do not make the cut.

Things I look for in a good bid:

  • a team that will make Blender fun for everyone. This includes;
    • a team that will participate in the Saturday night event
    • a team that puts a lot of effort into their Friday night campsite and theme
    • a team that keeps 'fair play' and 'spirit of the game' in mind on the field
    • a team that contributes to the community through charity
    • a team that is about involving lots of people (ie. big rosters are fun!)
  • a team that plays hard
    • a team that will be competitive and raise the level of play
    • past champions, national-calibre teams, regional participants, established teams
  • a team that is respectful of both myself, my volunteers, and other participants
    • we don't get paid - don't give us grief and tell us what we 'owe' you
    • obey the rules and don't cause us problems with the community
    • be a team that other teams enjoy playing and seeing, not 'those assholes'
  • a team that is creative
    • with some exceptions who have their 'thing' and do it amazingly well, don't repeat themes
    • humour, creativity and ingineuity on their bid
  • a team that loves ultimate and loves Gender Blender
    • be ultimate fanatics
    • spread the word near and far and continue to make GB the legend it has become
    • 'get' what the sport of ultimate is about
  • a few other things...
    • creativity and originality is great. outright bribery is not.
    • get your cheques in on time
    • read the website and don't harass me with questions that are already answered
    • get your cheques in on time
    • if it's not clear though, please do ask, don't just assume and it helps me get better
    • get your cheques in on time
    • make sure your team fills out the waivers and the team submission form
    • get your cheques in on time
So, just being a national champion won't get you in if you have no spirit and won't contribute to the event. Being an amazing fun team that loves to party but shirks their social obligations to the community and will be a drag for even the 37th place team to beat 15-0 won't get you in either. We are looking for the best overall teams to come to our tourney.

What do I get?
Your fee pays for your camping (which includes hot showers, bathrooms with running water and electricity. It also covers breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday. It also covers all your other tourney fees (so we can do things like book fields, have a party tent, cool the beer, etc etc.)

Saturday Night 70's Disco Dance Off
The Saturday Night Showcase this year is a 70's themed Disco-Dance off! Details on it can be found here.

Banking and Bids
We WILL bank your deposit when we get it. If it bounces, don't expect that to be in your favour for getting a bid.

If your team is not accepted, we will mail back your deposit money around the start of the tourney (June 1st).

We get a lot of bids. Incomplete bids will not be accepted.

Camping
Please bring everything you need for our site which provides camping, ultimate and partying. If camping's not your thing, ask the local Chamber of Commerce (tel 519 843 5140, fax 519 787 0983). If you are camping, pray for sun and dry warmth.

Please also take a minute to read the full Camping Rules . You might learn something useful or important. Really. The same basic no-brainer camping rules apply every year.

The Basic Rules:

No Open Fires! Please. If you want to cook, toast marshmellows, or warm your toes at night, please bring a camp stove and use it responsibly.

No 10,000 Watt BOOM-BOXES! Feel free to bring your own music makers, but keep it reasonable. While sleep is optional (and not included in our fee), nobody wants to spend listless hours wishing for the Soundgarden, NWA or Grateful Dead to stop. Bring your own (acoustic) instruments if you want to jam all night. Without ruining the festivities, we just want to appeal to common courtesy: there's no need to keep everyone awake just because you want to be up all night. That said, it's a tournament and we want it to be fun, so don't come expecting the campsite to be like your peace-tank in the basement. Two words: ear plugs.

Please bring your own food/beverages. We will be pulling the plug on the sound system and kegs around 1am on Sunday, it made the locals happier to know we would at least pretend to act restrained. So, let it be known that all parties in the campsites after 1am will be byob.

Dogs
Our current policy is that dogs are allowed at Gender Blender. This will continue provided everyone follows the Community Centre's rules about dogs. Dogs must be on leashes at all times. Dogs not on leashes may end up at the pound. Stoop and Scoop. This applies to every dog, all the time. We're not above revisiting any 'forgotten leftovers' on their owners... preferably in their tents at 3am in the morning.

No Hat Team
Just what it says: there will be no hat team. Every year captains contact us, usually in the two weeks before the tournament, looking for players, usually women. If you would like to go on a list of players looking for teams, especially if you are a woman, please email us.
